Foundation Portfolio G321

Preliminary Task:

One of the first tasks that I needed to complete in media was the Preliminary Task. In the preliminary task, I was asked to pick people within my class therefore, I could make a production team of 4 and our task was to make a small radio show, containing the following: an interview with a special guest (Ed Sheeran) that is linked to the topic that we came up with, which is the music department, and with the duration of the radio show must be 30-40 seconds. Moreover, out group had to produce a name that we will call to our radio show, and we all agreed to call it " Tune FM", with the theme.

Who are my group and their roles:
- Alberto Santos Pinto: presenter of the show
- Eduardo: the special guest and music editor
- Jason Hall and I: editor of voice and piecing the whole show together

Firstly, the whole group came to discussion about who is the target audience of the radio show would be and consider review which option (in out opinion) would be straightforward. We came to a conclusion to pick the target audience of music enthusiasts, thus the main guest of the radio show would be a musical sensation, who is well-known in the music industry and community. After the discussion, it was decided that the guest would be Ed Sheeran. this is because he is a very influential singer and is recognised for his amazing talents and song writing. Afterwards, the group then had to decide what the radio show's name would be, which was decided to be called as " Tune FM", as it creates a more accurate feel of the content of the show, as music.

The draft checklist that the group over viewed when creating the show (unfinished )
Secondly, the group had to make a script that accentuated what the presenter and guest would say to one another. Furthermore, the group had to take into consideration on what type of jingle would be playing at the intro and outro of the radio show. Eduardo took it into his own hands and used an application called Garage Band, the codes and convention of the radio show developed up to its genre of being a music radio.Which included: Chatty presenter, no dead air, interview and time (optional)

There are two types of scripts, one being initial draft that was used to record since it appeared to be more pleasant and efficient. Although, when further analysing the several questions we have to answer, it was decided to re-write and re-record certain parts as we wanted to fit more codes and conventions, which build the radio show and address the audience more.

Old script

The screenshot on the left is the illustration of the first script that our script writer came up with when we were planning the radio. The script on the left is not 100% the best since some of the lines were a bit long which makes the editing process a bit time- consuming and difficult.

New script
The image on the left was the final script draft and a direct improvement of the old script. We made this improvement because we needed to include the variety of codes and conventions that create the genre of radio news.
Furthermore, we had to improve our old script because we wanted to make it attractive and eye-catching by including some names of social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. We decided to put this in since we want a way to communicate with our audience whenever they want to ask questions.

Flow Chart of the radio show
The image above a flow chart that Jason Hall and I created. This was needed because firstly, it gives an outline of the different aspects of the show and where the show beings and ends. This is crucial to me, as an editor, due to the fact that it helps me focus on what sequences I must follow to what my colleagues suggested. Secondly, we used colour coding to identify which section of the flow chart, hence we wouldn't be confused on what sequence we need to put them. Additionally, the flow chart benefits me to understand when I put the jingle and the background music of the radio show. Finally, my group said to make the jingle quieter, therefore they can hear the background music.

Furthermore, the group had to begin recording the newly created script, after it was being finalised by the group. The image below signifies the group recording the beginning the stages of the radio show, with Alberto using Audacity to say his first line. The group had to ensure that when recording, there are no any unwanted noises that could affect the overall quality of the recording.

Thr group recording the first presenter lines of the show
Afterwards,  Jason Hall and I had to edit the voice and audio to guarantee it was in order and at the right pitch and volume, (therefore I had to use the Amplify tool and be accustomed to the tool because I' am a rookie at editing.) the reason why we used this tool is because it enables us to manipulate certain parts of the audio, whether the voices had to be amplified or either lower the volumes of the voice to increase the volume the audio that was too quiet. Additionally, we had to constantly use the shift tool to place the audio in the right sequence, following the structure of the flow chart. On the other hand, Eduardo had to import the jingle and BGM (therefore we can start putting it on the radio show).
Evidence of using the Amplification tool
Me trying to learn how to properly edit using Audacity

Whilst collaborating with Jason Hall, I learned about labelling tracks. This was important since it is only labelling a track. But, this labelling made it exceptionally easier to edit, to get an overview of the tracks since it tells us what track was being edited and became more efficient for the placing of other audio and musical pieces, creating a better visual and accurate editing.

Labelled tracks
Additionally, the editing process meant that we had to edit the show to fit the requirements of the show, therefore the set time of between 30-40 seconds. At first glance, the radio show seemed to fit this bases, although after the jingle and guest music were added, the show increased to 45 seconds. This meant we had to cut certain parts out of the script and the audio. This was mainly dead air spaces and too long of lines that were cut.

Video Demonstration:

The video above is a demonstration of certain aspects that were discussed during the production of the show, clarifying different ideas and editing styles of the show, like music entrance for the guest and script writing on the production. In this video, it is outlined the different guest music intro that would be used and what parts of the script would be used.

NEWS
RESEARCH METHODS:

What is NEWS?

The news is an information about recent events or happenings, especially as reported by means of newspaper, website, radio, television, and other forms of media.
News has become very beneficial to society because it keeps them up to date about what is going to their country and to the other far corners of the globe.

There are many types of news at moment, each category of news has their own purposes in order to inform the readers about the general topic of the news article and here are some examples: Timeliness, proximity, unusualness, bad news, impact, celebrities, entertainment, follow ups and lastly, Media Agenda

Timeliness:
The Timeliness news is about the relevance to the audience in TIME ZONE, this implies that if the event recently occurred then it is considered as news, in vice versa, if the event is old then its is old news.

Timeliness news

Proximity:

Next is Proximity, this kind of news is simply about how distant you are from the event of the news item. For example, a stabbing incident has occurred near your flat. These type of news matters more to you than the citizens in Scotland since the proximity of the news item is near you, hence you are more affected by it.
Proximity news

 Unusualness:
The third type of new is Unusualness, these types of news don't typically occur on a daily basis. An example would be like a man having a Giraffe as his pet animal. This was fall in the category of Unusualness news as events like these are rare, hilarious and invokes the reader to read to discover a back story of the news.

Unusualness news

Bad News:
Moreover, we have the Bad News type. These type of news article are the negative overtones of the section of the newspaper or a radio broadcast mainly because it is about conflicts that are occurring across the globe or even, strikes like Tube Strikes. Furthermore, these types of news articles are very dynamic to report by a journalist since it affects a large scale of citizens.

Impact:
Additionally, we have the impact news, generally, these are the news that affects plenty of people in a country or in a local area. For example, an Ebola outbreak. This will concern a thousands of  people because their lives are in peril and it will kill many citizens very fast. As readers, they take this into account because it raises awareness about what is currently occurring in the country or in an area.

Impact News

Celebrities:
Celebrities News

Celebrities are the type of news that usually discusses the elite and famous people or even powerful countries. Additionally, celebrity news is based on what is currently happening with celebrities. Although, the influence of media can spark a negative effect image of these celebrities because the Media wants to be consumed with drama or create conflict with other celebrities to make a story or rumour.

Celebrities are the type of news that usually discusses the elite and famou people or even powerfil countries. Additionally, celebrity news is bas

Understanding Audience

Understanding Audience is based on the demographics of a certain area. The general public is one of the main concepts of demographics due to the fact all people have their own opinions about a controversial topic.

There are 8 types of demographics to understand audience:

1) Age
2) Gender
3) Sexual orientation
4) Location
5) Social Class
6) Ethnicity
7) Disabilities
8) Culture

Out of all these 8 categories, I believe social class, class, ethnicity and location are the most important demographics to understand my audience. Firstly, location, this is because it will be easy for me to gather information about where they live, for example, if they live in Liverpool then they're most likely to listen to news related to Liverpool since the local people are most likely to be affected. Secondly, ethnicity, because different times of ethnicity have their own likes and dislikes. This will help me understand what their opinions are on certain topics about their local area, news values and what types of news they would like to hear.

To further expand on my knowledge of understanding about audiences, my friend and I went to Westfield and conducted our own research by interviewing a wide-ranging of audiences and ask some questions.

Me and Media:
There are wide-ranging media platforms that other individuals and I apply everyday life that is produced for a diverse target audience. I will discuss the types of media platforms that I predominantly collaborate and the reason why I admire these types of media platforms and their features of appeal.

Social Media:
Firstly social media, this is because this application empowers other individuals and to exchange words with another via texting. This feature of social media is the main centre of appeal for all kinds of audiences since many people can type the way they speak, therefore they can emphasise a particular word to the sender and understand how they feel. The best example is the acronym " LOL" (Laughing Out Loud). Furthermore, social media is free of charge, in gist, the person can communicate with other individuals without having to think about paying, expanding the appeal of audiences towards social media. The most frequent social media app that I use is Facebook.

An example of social media platform that I frequently use.

The image above draws to an attention about how I was able to manipulate the app by sharing with friends and family about my personal life and my feelings to a given topic, whether it's a picture or a video. This appeals me because it enables me to demonstrate other images and videos that may share the same emotions I feel about it. Furthermore, back in 2010, that was the year I felt that Facebook really ignited the entertainment value of Facebook as I was able to enjoy niche types of games such as Ninja Saga, because of this, it proves that audiences are Homoludens (humans who love to play video games) or gamers, since people adore playing video games and experiencing playing with other players.

Video Game:
Secondly, another media platform that I frequently use is video gaming. The gaming platform main target audience is appealing gamers. Video gaming companies supply their target audience with a huge selection of different games, with different genres that appeal to certain type of gamers- whether they're a casual gamer or hardcore gamer. The main appeal of video gaming is the idea of entering a virtual world and escaping their reality. Furthermore, another appeal if video gaming is its online feature. This feature allows a gamer to play with another player across the world! this feature is the reason why gaming companies add this feature to increase popularity and help influence potential player to play their game!

The PlayStation 4 is the gaming platform that I frequently use. This particular gaming console has many aspects that not only attracts to me but the target audience. One great feature that adds to its appeal is the speed of the console as its capability of playing and downloading games at a fast pace compared to its old predecessors! this allows gamers like me to play games at faster.

Primary research: INTERVIEWING (Qualitative)

On the 29th of October 2016, my partner and I conducted our own primary research which is the use of interviewing to understand the significant news values that are relevant in my specific area. The focus of the question was aimed to find out the relevant events and the impacts. The interview is an example of qualitative due to the fact of its depth analysis on a certain topic.
for our interview, we decided to go to Westfield because it offers a wide-ranging of audiences, gender, age and opinions about their specific area that they live in and what they think could be improved in their local area.

Here are the questions that we used:
1) How well do you know your area?
2) What do you like about your area?
3) What kind of news would like to know about your area?
4) What do like to improve about your area?

And here is their responses:

1) interview No.1

The first interviewee we sought was a staff member of a clothing shop in Westfield. From the interview, the woman suggest that she has a  great knowledge about her local area and she reveals in her answer that she suggest "cheaper transport and more news related to cultural event...." clearly this is individual is busy woman which means news relating to Transportation will be a key factor her to since it help her keep up to date with her local area's transportation schedules.

2) interview No. 2

The second interviewee we asked was a random bystander in Westfield. From the interviewee, the man is also keen to know more about his local area and from his vivid description, he seems to enjoy living there. Although, he didn't seem to know how his local area could be improved, which would suggest that he is simply satisfied with his local areas' status.

3) interview No. 3

The third interviewee we asked was a staff member of H&M. From the interview, it was heavily noticeable that she is an active member of her community and seem to enjoy her local area. However, she in her answer, she also said that there were too many people living in her local area and news proximity were ideal rather than the usual controversial or detestable figures in the world.

4) interview No. 4

The final interviewee was another store clerk of Top Shop. From the interview, it clearly states that he has little knowledge of his local area since he recently moved to London from America, but he did say that he likes the comfort of his local area by doing leisure activities. Furthermore, he also added in his answer that heavy traffic was an issue within his local area, hence he wanted to make improvements about the issue and also, he wants news based around on historical contents.

Secondary research: RAJAR (Quantitative)

Evidence of using RAJAR as Secondary research:

RAJAR is a website that operates a single audience measurement system for the UK radio industry supporting both the BBC and licensed commercial stations. The companies jointly owned by the BBC and the RadioCentre showing the vast majority of commercial radio stations across the UK. RAJAR measures the audience in specific areas and categories what percentage of people in these areas listen to certain radio stations.

For this section, I will conduct a research about two local news bulletin; which are Capital Manchester and BBC Manchester

Homepage of RAJAR

BBC Manchester RAJAR

Capital Manchester RAJAR
Additionally, to help my understand of rural and urban area and their radio audience amounts, I used RAJR to find out the percentage difference between my two two bulletin examples which are: BBC Manchester and Capital Manchester. More on RAJAR, RAJAR measures the audience in certain areas and categories what percentage of people in these areas listen to the particular situations. Hence, helping my knowledge on what radio bulletin audience tend to listen more.

My analysis for both of these contrasting starts off with their percentage difference of the Listener share, looking at BBC Manchester's screenshot the percentage amount is 6%, meaning that 5% percent of Manchester tends to listen to BBC Manchester. Although, it was different when looking at Capital Manchester percentage of listener share because it says that 5.8% of Manchester's citizens listens to Capital Manchester. The reason behind this surprising statistics is that as an audience myself I too will prefer commercial radio since commercial radio offers a radio edited music after a news that is summarised is finished broadcasting. This means that when an audience is tuning to a commercial radio their favourite music might be featured and thus creating audience interest. Additionally, commercial radios feature the top music hits that the audience themselves listen to. Lastly, as a listener of a commercial radio, I truly believe that during a conversation it makes a listener feels like they are involved which creates a different atmosphere of radio broadcasting and factoring the way these presenters speak even creates a more friendly or light-hearted. Compared to a BBC news all of these factors are never present due to the fact that BBC News likes to emphasise on the seriousness. therefore the news is delivered more efficiently and to be understood clearly.

Understanding the Genre features of a local radio news broadcast:

Location of my local radio news bulletin
In my next task, I had to record a local radio news in a certain area in the UK, which can be located on the BBC radio website and must begin at 6:00 pm, therefore I can record a 5-6 minutes of a live radio using Audacity. After it finished recording, I must then identify some examples of codes and conventions that of the local news bulletin and place them on my blog. I decided to pick BBC Manchester for my local news bulletin, which in the UK is located north-west of London.

List of all BBC News radio stations

Codes and Conventions of the local news bulletin:

Codes and convention are techniques used by radio station that implement a certain effect on a radio news broadcast and towards the audience. There are many types of codes and conventions and are diverse depending on the situation, for example, a sports radio broadcast would use codes and conventions like a very energetic jingle and an appreciative interview from a famous athlete. Thus, the audience can be kept amused. While in a news radio broadcast, it tends to use a very strict and formal type of interview that the continuity announcer has physically recorded therefore the audience can be properly educated. From analysing the local radio broadcast that I recorded from BB Manchester, I was able to identify 6 wide-ranging kinds of codes and conventions that the local radio broadcast used.

1) C&C: Jingle: codes and conventions

The first codes and conventions that I was able to identify is the Intro Jingle, this kind of feature is mainly used at the beginning of the radio broadcast. This intro music may last between 3 seconds to a minute depending on the radio news broadcast, in my preliminary task, the jingle lasted for 15 seconds. This kind of feature is very vital to a radio news broadcast as it lets the audience that the radio nes broadcast is about to begin. Furthermore, it is also said that for the jingle is to allow the audience to have a quick break before the important news of the day.

2) C&C: Radio Identification

The second codes and conventions is the Radio Identification. This section of the radio news broadcast is simply where the name of the radio broadcast is said.

3) C&C: Continuity Announcer

The third codes and conventions that I was able to identify is the continuity announcer. A continuity announcer is the typical news reporter who distributes the reliable information towards the audience of the radio broadcast, this type of code and convention is very frequent in any news related broadcast. This codes and convention portrays a very optimistic idea towards the radio broadcast and by progressing to give the dependable information to the audience it makes easier for the audience to consider that the stories are more praiseworthy.

4) C&C: Top News

The fourth codes and conventions is the Top News. This section of the local radio news broadcast is demonstrated to be the most vital assets as this is the reason why they would visit the radio news broadcast. Additionally, the Top news section is where the audience will mainly be educated or informed about what is currently occurring inside and outside of the country.

5) C&C: No Dead Air:

The next codes and convention is the No Dead Air. This simply means that the continuity announcer does not stop speaking for more than 2-3 seconds. The emphasis of this particular code and convention is that it creates a dead air that the show i over or has stopped broadcasting for a short moment. The no dead air reiterates that the local radio news broadcast is still happening and making the audience believe that the broadcast has finished.

6) C&C: Interview:

The sixth code and convention is the interview, which is normally inserted in between the Top News of the news broadcast. The main purpose of this feature is to prove that the report given to the audience is real facts, as simply saying the news segement would not aprove the local news broadcast completely to some auduience members. Therefore, the interview segment enables the audience to presume the local new boradcast more. the interview will be an good assets to my local news bulletin because the person who is being interviewed suggest that the whole emphasis of the local news broadcast reiterates that the local radio news bulletin is still going.

7) C&C: Outro Jingle:

The final code and convention is the outro jingle. Similarly, with the jingle, the purpose of this code and convention is to notify the audience that the radio broadcast is going to finishing.

Commercial Radio News: Understanding genre

I was then asked to record an another live local news bulletin from a commercial radio broadcast and I have chosen is CAPITAL MANCHESTER. This particular radio bulletin is considered one of the top music stations, the institution does news bulletin too, due to the fact that they need to follow OFCOM's licensing- enforcing them to broadcast daily news.

location of Capital FM Manchester

I have recorded the news bulletin on 'Audacity'  and I' am tasked to understand the content analysis, this is because it will ensure that I know what content would be required in a news bulletin. Additionally, I have to project what news values are being used in each story, hence helping my understanding of news bulletin and content analysis.

Codes and convention of commercial radio:

CC 1: Intro Jingle:

The first codes and conventions that I was able to identify is the Jingle (intro). Equally, to my BBC radio broadcast, this specific code and convention will notify the audience that the radio news broadcast is about to start, This jingle lasts for 8 seconds.

CC 2: Presenter:

The second codes and conventions is the Continuity Presenter, which is the section of the radio broadcast where the presenter introduces themselves to the audience and to illustrate the authority that they have the to announce the news.

CC 3: Top News:

The next codes and convention is the Top News of the local news bulletin. This code and convention are shown at the start of the broadcast right after the jingle is played and when the announcer as introduced themselves to the audience. Equally, this code and convention are the bread and butter of the local news bulletin because, this the reason why the audience wants to listen to the news broadcast, to be informed about the current situations happening in their area or around the world.

CC 4: Weather:

The fourth code and convention is the Weather. Similarly to the BBC news broadcast that I did, this section of the news bulletin will briefly talk about the area's weather. This connects to  the radio focusing on a certain target audience as the show mainly concentrates on informing the audience about the weather situations in their area

CC 5: Outro Jingle:

The final code and convention is the Outro Jingle, this is shown at the ending of the broadcast and signifies that the broadcast is coming to its end. This code and convention is illustrated by the use of music in the background, which is very identical to the intro jingle of the broadcast, informing the audience that the broadcast is about to end.

BBC vs Commercial news:
During my research in BBC and Commercial news, I learned innumerable amount of difference between the two through their use of codes and conventions that I analysed. One explicit difference between BBC and Commercial news is that the news presenter of Commercial news has a talkative tone, adding more appeal and casual or laid back. On the other hand, BBC's news presenter contains a serious type of tone when presenting the news to the listeners.

Secondly, the duration of news items for the BBC and Commercial news also differs. This is because BBC news maximum duration is 4-5 minutes without the use music in the background, whereas a Commercial news bulletin lasts for 2-3 minutes with music playing in the background in most of the time. The reason for this is because each news station is required to present a news to their audiences despite if it's a short news item due to the fact that the organisation that gives the licences proclaims that every listener of a radio station is entitled to know what is going on around the world or in the UK. Thus, each radio station that they appeal has to have a news item ready to be broadcasted for their audience.

Hypodermic Needle Theory:

The "Hypodermic Needle Theory" implied mass media had a direct, immediate and powerful effect on its audience. The mass media in the 1940s and 1950s were perceived as a powerful influence on behaviour change. The theory suggests that the mass media could influence a very large group directly and uniformly by 'shooting or 'injecting' them with either an appropriate or inappropriate messages designed to trigger a desired response. They express the view that the media is a dangerous means of communicating an idea because the receiver or audience is powerless to resist the impact of the message. People are seen as passive and are seen as having a lot media material 'shot' at them. People end up thinking what they are told because there is no other source of information. An example of this is in the 1930's by researchers with an intention in explaining the effect of mass media consumption and propaganda in World War 1. The Nazi parties believed the media was highly influenced, and so one of their most effective methods of gaining support seemingly converted a whole population to supporting Hitler's rule through the use of Radio broadcast. The audience were the passive audience and related that is, each consumer accepts the message presented by the media is blindly accepted despite of individual difference.

Stuart Hall's Encoding and Decoding Theory:

The model below is a representation of what a simple message looks like

Encoding and Decoding Theory diagram

The diagram is a real concept of Stuart Hall's theory on Encoding and Decoding of a certain programme or picture for example. Encoding and Decoding model of communication is a model that suggest that TV, pictures, or any forms of media audiences are presented with messages that are decoded, or interpreted in wide-ranging ways depending on an individual's cultural background, economic standing, personal experience and frameworks of knowledge. When an audience decodes a message, they are extracting the meaning of that message into terms that they're able to understand.

Decoding of a message is how an individual is capable of understanding and interpret the message, it is the process of interpretations and translation of coded information into a comprehensible structure. The audience is trying to re-establish the idea by giving meaning to symbols and by interpreting the message as a whole.

Stuart Hall argues that there are three positions that people may take upon decoding a television or a picture information. He states that three different codes as decoding do not match inevitability from encoding. Thus, just because a message is encoded on a television is a certain way, it does not imply it will decoded in its proper format. These codes are Dominant codes, Negotiated Codes and the Oppositional code.

1) Dominant Reading:
This code is one where the audience takes the real message directly and decodes it exactly the way it was decoded. For example, political and military superiors mainly create the politics of Northern Ireland and the Chilean Coup. These superiors created the dominant interpretations as these concepts were hegemonic interpretations, they become dominant. Stuart Hall illustrates that if an audience of a news bulletin decoded the message in terms of the reference code in which it has been encoded that the viewer would be operating inside the category of the dominant territory.

2) Negotiated Reading:
This code suggests that the audience partially disagrees and broadly accepts the decoded meaning of the news bulletin. The audience sometimes modifies it in a way in which reflects their own positions, experience and personal interest. An example of this is when a viewer/ audience enjoys reading a magazine, although, this individual disagrees on what the messages that the magazine portrays towards its readers.

3) Oppositional Reading:
Lastly, there is the oppositional reading. Stuart Hall suggests that the audience or viewers can understand the meaning of a message while decoding a message in a globally contrary way. Meaning that individual can understand that their message of the audience is unacceptable and, or what was intended, but, changes the message in their mind to fit an " alternative framework of reference".

Using Stuart Hall types of Capital FM:

1) Dominant Reading for local radio bulletin Capital FM:
It is relieving to hear that Britain and the United States are punishing Russia and Syria because it helps the two countries to stop the civil war which is very beneficial as Russia and Syria would be saving their countries economic state and improve the quality of life of their citizens

2) Negotiated Reading for local radio bulletin Capital FM:
It's good to see that Britain and the United States are collaborating together to prevent the civil war between these two countries by punishing Russia and Syria, but as a pacifist, I hope their method of punishing des not involve violence to influence Russia and Syria about their aims. Additionally, if Britain and the United States do use violence, more soldiers or casualties will be affected with severe injuries.

3) Oppositional Reading for local radio bulletin Capital FM:
Why is Britain joining forces with the United States? isn't the US has the most powerful military to repel an assault from Russia or Syria, so why is Britain meddling with other countries problems, especially during a war? if there is a civil war then Britain will only increase the death

Dominant ideology:
The term dominant ideology means the attitude, beliefs, values and morals spread out by the majority of the people in a given society; as a purpose of social control. The dominant ideology frames how the majority of the population thinks about the nature of society, their place in society, and their connection to a social class.

Active vs Passive Audience:
An active audience is one that actively engages with the text. They do not simply accept the media message, they ask questions based on what they see and develop on their own interpretation of a media product based on their life experiences, education, family and cultural influences. ' Bottom up' theories generally links to an active audience. Theories like "Uses & Gratification" and "Postmodernist theory" assume that audiences are active.

A passive audience does not actively engage with a media text. A passive audience is one that does not question the message that the media is sending and simply accepts the message in the way the media outlet intended. 'Top down' theories of media influence tend to assume that audiences are passive. Theories such as "Bullet/ Hypodermic" and "Agenda setting function" assume audiences are passive.

The Illusion of "Effect Theory":

The illusory truth effect is the tendency to believe the information to be linked after a repeated amount of exposure. This phenomenon was first discovered in 1977 at the University of Villanova.

The illusory truth effect was a visible impact in the political sector. By appealing to unconscious biases and belief, politicians are able to form believable claims, the claims become increasingly believable since the illusory truth effect suggest. This effect was seen in Donald Trump's 2016 presidential campaign. He made the assertion that Muslims in New Jersey had to celebrated the September 11th terrorist assault, and that he had personally seen a video footage of the event. By appealing to emotionally and racially charged biases and beliefs, it rapidly became a repeated and believed claim, despite being shown to be false information. Although Donald Trump claims were not true, they were still believed due to the impact of the illusory truth effect.

Understanding 'Local':

When we talk about understanding Local, the audience size was mainly a local platform but has developed globally. Additionally, it discusses about a certain area or neighbourhood. Although, when considering the word local in media, it is usually connected with making a news story in certain areas and neighbourhoods, in definition, local wold be less interesting to other local areas and that local news mainly concentrates on certain aspects, producing what's called Niche audience, this is because of the relevant topics and bulletins that wil affect the area, which does not affect other local areas. In radio bulletins, this is mainly illustrated as the top news headline (first news topic). These may be illustrated in:

  •  Local Weather
  •  Local Sport
  •  Local Justice
  •  Local Celebrity
  •  Local Education
  •  Local Transport
  •  Etc.
How is a local radio successful?
- A serviceable local information E.g weather or transport
- Must have a distinguish of music they use in order to retain audience interest OR use a variety of Soundeffects that is suitable to the context of the news story (E.g a thunder SFX for a stormy night?)
-  Challenging to become a "Local Hero", what this means is that it is local campaigning and giving all sides of an argument.

Cultivation Theory:

the cultivation theory was made in 1976 by George Gerbner, which specialises on the long-term effects of media like television and states that the more time you observe the same thing, the more the individual is likely to follow it, this is because of the frequent amount of the media platforms like the TV, influencing the audience's point of view of reality. an example of this is that if an individual will believe that the world around us is violent and dangerous. This is because of the repeated amount of exposure changing an individual's perspective or point of view of reality.

The reason why our group wanted to have a media plan for the production is because it helps us stay on the right course of the production when making a different news item. Each week enables our group members to do know their jobs, tasks and deadline. By doing this, it will help us finish the work before the deadline submission for the local news bulletin. Furthermore, each week will remind me ( the news research) what kind of news topic we want to focus on for our local news bulletin.

Flow Chart:

Flow Chart for News item 1 Honey G
The flow chart was created because it will greatly benefit our co-editor, Alberto Santos Pinto when editing the first news value: Entertainment. Each slot contains what sequence we want the news item to appear and by the use of colour coding; the editor will easily recognise which one will go next.

As a whole group, we became making consolidation and decided that the script would be re-written since it was very long and try to include simple points to ensure that the audience understands what is happening and to ensure that the listeners don't end up getting bored.

The second draft of our script was the final script for News item 1, this is because of many reasons: Firstly, during the introduction, it said " thank you", which is not required as people can just go to the local news bulletin. Secondly, the introduction about Honey G is irrelevant since citizens of Harrow Road should be already informed about her true identity and since she is a local celebrity. Furthermore, our co-editor of voice: Patricia Tiparu insisted that we should include a Voxpop, therefore we can get a snapshot of the public's opinion about Honey G, and so our interviewer: Panos Karachalios went to Harrow and conducted a Voxpop. The addition of the Voxpop was the main reason why we wanted to re-write our script and this also meant that we have to erase some verse because if we use all the information on the first draft along with the Voxpop (which lasts 12s), it will exceed the maximum duration of one news item.

My Blogger Walkthrough:

Production:

For this exercise, I was given the task of producing my very OWN local bulletin production that lasted 5 minutes ( the duration of a typical bulletin). This production needed a wide-ranging of different tasks and checklist ideas, such as:

1) The duration of the production being 5 minutes long!
2) The local bulletin having a range of news elements!
3) A variety of unique codes and conventions (E.g. Voxpops, interviews, specialist reporter and etc.)
4) To be in a group of four and give each other specific tasks!
5) Finally, decide what local area your production will focus on (Harrow Road)

In my group and the roles:

the group that I was decided to assign each other different roles to follow and that offer their skills throughout the process of the production, and to follow different news item to maintain the amount of research each person performed.

( Also, the group members that I had in the preliminary were not my group members for this task!)

Panagiotis Karachalios:
- Follow the role of script-writer and interviewer of the news items
- Follow the news items of CRIME AS OB and Interviewer

Alberto Santos Pinto:
- Leading editor of all news items using Audacity
- Follow the news item of weather as OB

Patricia Tiparu:
- She follows the role of co-editor of voice and second script-writer of the whole production piece
- Follows the role of the main presenter of the bulletin throughout.

ME:
- I was assigned as the role of the editor of the intro and outro for the jingle, weather jingle and the BGM (Background Music) for the news bulletin. This obligated me to use Garange Band so that I can fulfil my duty in the group and further expand my skills.
- I was assigned as OB of the Follow-up news item.
- My second duty was to also be the leading editor of sound effects. This has obligated me to use Freesound.org for our news items such as Crime, Follow-up, Travel and Media Agenda.

- Lastly, I was also the news researcher of all the news items and ensure that our script-writer Panos understands it, therefore he can produce the final version of the script for Patricia.

Furthermore, each week will remind me (the news research) what kind of news topic we want to focus on for our local news bulletin.

Location of our Local New Bulletin

News item #1: Honey G (Entertainment)

Provenance:

Entertainment Provenance

The image above is where our group got the idea of doing the entertainment news bulletin. As the leading news item researcher, I found the news item through the use of secondary research, with the help of Harrow Times. The reason why our news items was a soft type news is because we wanted to focus on the locality of the first news item. Also, by using this website it has enabled me to understand the news more efficiently.

Tool and recording process:

Envelope Tool

Evidence of using the envelope tool
T
o edit our recording of News item 2 entertainment, our co-editor: Alberto Santos Pinto used the envelope tool to edit, using Audacity. The reason why this tool was used is because we wanted to reduce the volume of the BGM (Background music), therefore the listener can hear the introductory of the news presenter and so the transaction of the next recording cue after it would appear more fluid and that is more clearly.

indicates a good voice input

Before we started recording, we needed to ensure that our recording levels were suitable and in order to this, we checked the microphone levels to make sure that it was green and it was least 12 decibels when recording. The green indication implies that the voice is suitable. To improve the voice quality and make sure that it was at least 12 decibels, we used a voice popper and synergised with the microphone when recording since it helps to avoid plosive and breathing noises. Like this:

Equipment used

This process was done eight times in correspond with the eight news items, therefore the voice quality is sustained.

Furthermore, room tone was also taken into consideration because our teacher gave us a tip that when recording we should use the same room because if we use a different room to recording; it can negatively affect the voice quality by making either soft or a voice that sounds echoey. These effects cannot be made to improve especially with an echoey type voice.

Jingle Creation:

For this section, I will discuss on how I composed the jingle for the intro of our local news bulletin The application that allowed me to create the jingle was Garage Band.

Using Garage Band

First step of the jingle creation.

The first step of this jingle composition is finding the right BPM (Beats per minute). The reason for this is because the right BPM would allow me to make a good rhythm for the local news bulletin. After a long experiment, 135 BPM was the one and I did this by doing a trial and error type, using a drum kit sample provided by Garange Band

Synthesiser sample
The next part of the jingle composition is the synth. The picture above is what synth I used to help start of the jingle, this specific synth produces a very melodic tune, invoking the listener to feel delighted. Moreover, this specific synth was suitable to create a good build up and link to next part of the jingle.

Vocal
The third part of jingle composition was the use of vocals. The image on the left is the vocals that I used to piece it together and make a good synergy with the synth. In the vocals, the singer is saying " Get up, Get up, oooohhhaaaa" which invokes the listener to feel engaged.

The fourth part of the composition of the jingle is the use of a drum kit and more specifically the ' Basic Core Beat', the reason for this use is because this sample uses a suitable kick and snare to create a good flow and rhythm.

The second draft of our script was the final script for news item 1 this is because of many reason: firstly during the introduction, it said " thank you" which is not required because people can just go to the local news bulletin. Secondly, the introduction about Honey G is irrelevant since citizens of Harrow Road should be already informed about her true identity and former occupation. Furthermore, our co-editor of voice Patricia insisted that we should include a Voxpop, therefore we can get a snapshot of public's opinion about Honey G and so our main interviewer went to Harrow to achieve this. The addition of the Voxpop was the main reason why we had to re-write our script and this also means that we have to erase some verses because if we use all the information on the first draft along with the vox pop (which lasts 12s), it will exceed the maximum duration of one news bulletin.
Voxpop:

We went around the local area of Harrow Road to gather information about their opinion on their local celebrity Honey G for this news item. The question we asked was ' what is thoughts about Honey G on  X Factor?' the reason we asked this question for this news item is because the local citizens of Harrow Road are entitled to dispense their opinion on this entertainment on the X Factor.

SFX for News item 1

The image above is where I was told to gather soundeffects needed for our local news bulletin. For news item 1 we needed outside background noises such as car passing by with people talking in the background. The reason for this is because when we did our OB, the background noises at the back were sort of distorted and negatively affected the voxpops, therefore I was told by Alberto to look for a suitable background noise to fix the issue.

Final production of News item 1:

News item #2: Travel

Provenance:

For our second news item, we decided to do an entertainment news bulletin and I used secondary research again to achieve this. I found a travel news bulletin by going to Harrow Time once more since this type of news bulletin would normally affect the local residents of Harrow. Moreover, by visiting the Harrow Time, it gave me a very detailed explanation of what will happen on the underground station of Harrow. Essentially, the news article is about Transport Salaries Staff Association conducting a ballot for to launch a strike over safety concerns.

The script for news item 2 was short since we wanted to bring an emphasis on the importance of the news and its locality to the citizens of Harrow. Thanks to news item 1, I was able to make my research notes short and concise allowing our script-writer: Panos to make a summarised version of the news item.

Tool:

Evidence of using an Auto Duck tool
The image above the tool that our leading editor Alberto used to edit this particular news item, which is the 'Auto Duck' tool. The reason is because we wanted to reduce or duck the volume of one or more selected tracks, whether the volume of a single unselected track is placed underneath a particular threshold level. Our editor made the background lower during the moment when a correspondent speaks because it makes the correspondent's voice more of a halcyon voice while maintaining the background sound.

News items #3

Provenance:

Provenance of News item 3
The image above is where our group thought of the idea of composing the third news value which is a crime. Our interviewer Panagiotis Karachalios went to Harrow Road to sought out interviews about the public idea about this incident.

The script above is our first draft for news item 3 and thanks to the previous the news items; I been able to take out information more efficiently, and the information I have gathered must be short and also maintaining delivering the most important information. With this one, our group decided to do an interview of one of the eye-witnesses of the incident, this has enabled get to tap into their thoughts and opinions about the incident and also try to get a better picture of what really happened. With this, we can then start explaining to our audience in a simplified version.

Interview Questions for News Item 3
1  Where you near the bus station when the incident took place?

2  What is your opinion about this incident?

3  Do you feel safe in your area?

The image above are the questions that our Interviewer: Panos Karachalios used for this interview. As you can see the questions were mainly focused on the connection with the incident, therefore we were able to gather their thoughts and opinion about the incident.

Final production of News item 3:

News item #4 Follow-up:

Provenance:

Provenance of News item 4
The image above is where we got the idea of doing for news item 4 and it is a follow-up on the murder case of 18-year old murder victim Moamen Settar. As the main research of news items, I once again used secondary research to conduct my research and this was by the use of Harrow Times' website. The website was really useful to me as it helped get an overview of what happened to Moamen Settar and how it was taken care of. Furthermore, from what the headline suggest the word "Update" would imply that this news story relates to a previously story in which new information has been distributed which is good thing and as means, it is a news-worthy story since, it follows the news values of follow-ups in which an important news story has been released to the people of that area.

Script:

Finalised script for News item 4

The script above the finalised version of our script, we didn't do a second draft version as we believe it was suitable enough and concise because it had all the important fact that was we needed.  We have used an Outside Broadcast (OB) because it will allow us to give the audience further information about what the current status is now for Moammen's murdered who is a 19-year named Mussa Abid. By conducting an OB, it also indicates that we have challenged the codes and convention of a real news bulletin because you don't really hear a local news bulletin to live on the area they are talking about.

Tool:

Evidence of using the Sync-lock tool

The image above is the tool that our co-editor used to edit our news item 3 and it is called the ' sync-lock tool. The reason why we used this tool is because it allowed our co-editor to move the selected tracks at the same time. This is tool is useful as it makes the editing process more efficient and be convenient for our co-editor since he can move the tracks rather than moving them all one by one which will prolong the editing process.

Final production of News item 4:

News item #5 Business:

Provenance:

Evidence of use visiting Bombay Restaurant

The image above is where we got the idea of doing our news item 5 business. Whilst roaming around the streets of Harrow road we thought of a way on how to get news item without the use of secondary research from Harrow Times, therefore when we heard that there was a restaurant crowned on Harrow road from the locals we went there for ourselves to see if the restaurant was crowned "restaurant of the year". After we confirmed about their achievement, I then took it a bit further by using secondary research to understand how Bombay restaurant was able to achieve this award, therefore I can produce the correct script and pass on it for our script writer to finalise the draft.

Tool:

Evidence of using the Equaliser tool

The image above is the tool that our co-editor used and this is called the 'equaliser tool'. The equaliser tool is used because it allows our co-editor to utilise sounds by frequency where you can increase the volume of some frequencies and reduce others. While our co-editor was editing news item 5, he used the equalisation effect when we interviewed the manager of Bombay Central. This was done therefore it seems like a telephone call with him by choosing a certain curve from the equalisation effect, which reduces a certain of volume within the frequency of the recording in order to sound like a telephone call.

The script is the final version, we didn't create a second draft because the secondary research method helped to gain an insight about the overall summary of the news, hence all I need to do was to take out the most important information whilst making it short and concise. We decided to do an OB in the 'US Capital' since this would be a way of challenging the codes and convention of real life local news bulletin since it is very uncommon for a local news bulletin to be live at the area they are talking about.

Tool:

Evidence of using the Amplify tool
The image above is the tool that we used to edit the news and this tool is called the 'Amplify tool'. The reason why we used this is because we wanted to raise and lower some bits of the highlighted recording above so that it appears clear when you hear it.

For this news item, I was told by our co-editor to find a suitable jingle for the weather new item. Thus, I was obligated again to use Garage Band and look for a piano sample. The BPM set for the piano was 253 since its pace was too slow and therefore I needed to increase it more.
